While we have never had a problem with regard to sexual abuse at St. John’s, we would very much like to keep it that way.
Our commitment to Safe Church is grounded in our call to seek and serve Christ in all persons and respect the dignity of every human being. We are called to receive, nurture, and treasure each person as a gift from God. As a parish with many programs and activities, we are called to provide a safe and nurturing environment for our children, youth, and adults to learn and grow in the love of Jesus Christ. To that end, we are committed to making every effort to keep our church family safe from sexual abuse.
The Diocese of Newark has several programs available to educate and raise awareness of sexual abuse of children and youth as well as to prevent sexual harassment and exploitation of adults. All of these resources are available free of charge to us as a congregation.
Current policy adopted by our Diocesan Council requires all clergy, parish employees, and chaperones for events involving children and youth be up to date with the Diocese’s “Safeguarding Online” program. In short, all adults working with children and youth need to be current with the Safeguarding Online program.
