Lent at St. John's

Lent is a season of turning toward God, and toward one another. It is a time for prayer that opens our hearts, repentance that reshapes our lives, and faith that moves us to act. As we remember the cross and the promise of resurrection, we are invited to face the suffering of the world with honesty, courage, and hope. This Lent at St. John’s, we will make time to pray, to learn, and to grow in love—trusting that God’s justice and mercy are still at work among us, and that we are called to take part in that work together.

Ash Wednesday Services
Wednesday, February 18 at 12 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. It is a day of penitence, when we remember our mortality and humble ourselves before God. Join us for a contemplative service featuring the imposition of ashes and Holy Eucharist.

Lenten Book Study: Jesus and the Disinherited
Thursdays at 7 p.m. on Zoom, Begins February 26
This Lent we will read together Howard Thurman’s classic Jesus and the Disinherited. Written in 1949 during the era of Jim Crow, Thurman’s book explores how the teachings of Jesus speak to those living under oppression and how faith can equip us with courage, integrity, and hope. Nearly 75 years later, his insights continue to challenge the Church to confront fear, deception, and hatred, and to live faithfully in love and justice. Join us whether you’ve read or not - each week will also feature a short Bible study.

Lenten Series: Learning to Pray Together
Sundays after Coffee Hour, Begins February 22
Join us for a 5-week exploration of prayer as a communal act of hope and faithful resistance. We’ll reflect on how prayer helps the Church name suffering, challenge injustice, and imagine God’s reign more fully in our world. Together we’ll explore the Book of Common Prayer and write Collects and Prayers of the People that ground our worship in the real lives and struggles of our neighbors. Come when you can, bring your questions, and learn how common prayer forms us to seek healing, liberation, and love.

Schedule:
Feb 22 - Intro to Prayer & Collects
Mar 1 - Intro to Prayers of the People
Mar 8 - Writing Prayers Together
Mar 15 - Writing Prayers Together
Mar 22 - Writing Prayers Together
