The Reverend Carrie Cabush, Priest-in-Charge
More about Carrie Cabush (continued from home page)
Our discussions revealed that she is uniquely attuned to our current, ongoing, and long-term goals as a parish, and her leadership and liturgical styles, her spirituality and grace, and her overall personality strongly matched our needs. She is, in many ways, already “so St. John’s.” She is caring, introspective, and insightful. Carrie said that she heard God calling her to St. John’s throughout this long process.
Carrie, who was officially ordained in 2021, is excited to lead our congregation and share her passion for “multi generational community building, lifelong formation, and energizing outreach.” She notes, “I look forward to getting to know each of you as the individuals that make up the body of Christ as it is assembled at St. John’s. I hope we will share our passions and dreams with each other and find ways to live them out together.”
While at Calvary, Carrie focused her ministry on wide-ranging programs. She developed and ran youth groups, confirmation classes, and a service-learning trip to Navajo Nation. She also recruited, trained, and oversaw Sunday School teachers and confirmation sponsors. She created and led a multi generational Lenten series exploring the spiritual responsibility of anti-racism and diverse prayer practices. And, of course, Carrie has regularly preached and led worship services, both in person and virtually.
Carrie’s commitment to robust community and outreach perfectly complements our own commitment in those areas, and she has been involved in efforts that include backpack drives for children of incarcerated parents, Valentine’s Day outreach to seniors, and meal preparation and service at local shelters. She is on the ecumenical Board of Interweave and the Summit Interfaith Council, along with its Anti-Racism Committee.
Carrie is also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has been a mental health therapist, client advocate, and clinical and case management intern in a variety of healthcare settings.
Prior to her work at Calvary, Carrie was a postulant and intern at Christ Episcopal Church in Seattle, Washington, where, in addition to preaching and leading worship, she launched a unique initiative for community members by conducting a needs assessment. She was also part of a Street Chaplaincy program for the local unhoused community.
Carrie previously served a Chaplain internship at Morristown Medical Center and was a postulant, seminarian, and Sunday School coordinator at Christ Church in Short Hills. Carrie earned her Master of Social Work from Rutgers, her Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, and her Bachelor’s from Hamilton College.
A New Jersey native, Carrie enjoys spending time with her boyfriend Rohan, traveling, hiking, reading fiction, and trying out new cooking techniques, such as making pasta. Following in the footsteps of her father, the Reverend David Cabush, along with her social work, inspired her to answer God’s call to become a priest.
